BIOGRAPHY
LIM TZE PENG 林子平
Born 1921, Singapore
Lim Tze Peng is a self-taught Singapore artist who is a teacher by training and profession. As Singapore’s most significant living artist at the moment, Lim Tze Peng has a remarkable repertoire of scenes such as Singapore River, Chinatown and Kampung life. Having grown up in the kampongs of Singapore, Lim was deeply affected by the rapid modernization going on around him while the old Singapore was being torn down to make way for a new, cosmopolitan city. Lim made it his mission to document what was left of the old Singapore before it disappeared. This personal mission would prove to be highly influential on Lim’s artistic exploits as it engendered a sense of romanticism, reminiscence and a reverence for tradition. His latest calligraphic creations are exceptional examples of his pioneering ‘Nanyang’ spirit. Through the creative addition of colour to calligraphy, Lim Tze Peng has created a new expression that is modern, yet holds true to preserving Chinese tradition and culture.
