Back lanes are enchanting to Zhu Hong. It is there that he feels a sense of serenity which is lesser felt in the busy main streets. The enlarged gas cylinders commonly observed at the back of coffee shops have become a distinct icon in Zhu Hong’s illustrations of back lanes. They are evidence of Zhu Hong’s practice of emphasising the subjects that are interesting to him.
