During an interview for the Singapore Oral History Centre in 1997, Mr Foo Chee San was asked if sketching and painting on site was a compulsory subject at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. He replied that it was a curriculum set by the school as an academy’s classes should not only be revolving around still life or figure painting but also about being inspired by natural subject matters and outdoor sceneries.
In relation to this Mr Foo Chee San gave the example of Queen Elizabeth Walk at the Singapore River vicinity as a popular area amongst students during Saturday painting sessions. It was there that the artists could form compositions of the Anderson Bridge with the General Post Office (Fullerton Hotel) and banks in the backdrop.
This painting by Mr Foo Chee San is a nice extension of his comments and provides viewers a visual of the artist’s impression.
