Viewers are able to observe the thoughtful decision of placing the mandarin oranges and lilies together in the same composition. The colours of pink and orange from these 2 subjects forge a joyous and lighthearted ambience in the painting. These tones nicely expresses the liveliness of the lunar new year festivities, which was when this painting was completed. Wang has once again applied his iconic pastel tones in the background with free brushstrokes. These broad waves form a nice contrast and balance when observed with the details of the flower petals.
