This large painting by Lim Tze Peng is a unique painting as it demonstrates the maestro’s decision to focus solely on the shophouses along the Singapore River. This is in stark contrast with many of his past depictions where the river and bumboats would also be depicted. The lines drawn to form the structure of the shophouses are definite and the grey tones of ink applied forges the nostalgic ambience in this creation. It is full of life given the presence of coolies hard at work. The bright gold colour applied in the background adds to the vibrancy of this artwork.
