Eng Siak Loy and his contemporaries have fond memories of the old Singapore River. His forefathers who were of part of the Teochew community, lived along the banks of the Singapore river and were involved in the trading of sundry goods, textiles and other tropical produce. In this painting, Eng Siak Loy unified the shophouses and river with the masterly use of colours. A focal point was created in the painting as Eng emphasised the details of the boats whilst mystifying their surroundings.
