This is a complete and well painted scene of the old Singapore River by Mr Lim Tze Peng. The bumboats docked along the river are nicely placed and suggestions of ripples in the waters are painted naturally. The shophouses in the middle ground are well defined and structured with the application of steady ink lines. Overall the structures of the subjects are clear and well defined making the painting easy to accept amongst viewers.
The invigorating aspect of the artwork would be the bold use of red tones throughout the painting. Though the subjects are realistically painted to a considerable extent, the application of colours completely veers of that objective. This is a fine example of Mr Lim Tze Peng’s expressions of nostalgic scenes in recent times whereby colours are amplified and exaggerated, capturing the viewer’s attention in an instant.
