Located in Singapore’s Chinatown, Trengganu Street was once known for housing the 834 seat theatre opera house Lai Chun Yuen in the 1890s. Since then, the conservation and conversion of the 3 story shophouses earned it an entry to the 2002 UNESCO’s Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.
Eng Siak Loy utilised bright cheerful colours to depict the shops and street hawkers, forging a bustling atmosphere of Chinatown in the past. Muted tones were used to illustrate the old iconic shophouses. This creates a nice contrast and balance in this painting.
