One of the reasons why the artists from NAFA painted different villages in the region during the early days was because they were inspired by Lim Hak Tai who started the famous art school. Lim felt that the living styles of the people in this region should be published and recorded in art catalogues. Thus paintings should be depict subjects and scenes of how locals lived in their natural surroundings and not only street scenes and still life.
