This poem was written by Tang Dynasty poet Wang Chang Ling. It reflected his concerns over the constant wars around the borders and sympathy for the soldiers who were fighting the battles. The poem also indicates the collective hopes of the people to lead peaceful lives.

Lim Tze Peng is known for writing these poems which revolved around themes of patriotism or friendship. These long poems were then creatively interpreted and evolved into the muddled calligraphy creations that many know of today.
