3 Simple ways to preserve your oil paintings and keep them in good condition

The maintenance of your oil painting is a simple task. With 3 simple tips, your treasured work of art can be kept in good condition for many years.

1. Dust your oil painting 2 to 3 times a year

As time passes, dust and visible particles may accumulate on the surface of an oil painting. The action of dusting would reduce the dirt present on your work of art. You may use a simple house brush or a natural hair artist brush for this simple task. Tilt your oil painting on a well-cushioned surface that allows the dust to roll down before moving your brush in a back and forth motion Make sure that the action taken is light and slow with a dry and clean brush.

TIPS: If cracks and chips are observed, stop dusting and reach out to a professional restorer. You may choose to install an air purifier in the room where your oil painting is hung to filter the air and reduce dust.

2. Choose a suitable location for hanging

Keep your oil painting away from direct sunlight and heat. We do not recommend hanging your oil painting on a wall right by a window exposed to strong sunlight or a place that is near constant heat(Kitchen).

Strong, direct sunlight and heat could create cracks and blisters to appear on your oil painting.

TIPS: If you really love that wall which is right beside the window and think it’s the perfect spot for the oil painting, you can consider installing curtains or shades.

3. Choose a suitable location for storage

Avoid storing your oil paintings in a room with constant temperature fluctuations or places with high humidity. Such places could cause moulding on your prized possession. we encourage you to install a dehumidifier in the selected storage place before keeping your paintings.

TIPS: It is always good to ensure that there is some flow of air and ventilation in your storage space from time to time. These are good opportunities to have a look at your paintings and to ensure that they are in good condition.
